Hurricane Tips

Hurricane Preparedness

Put together a basic emergency supply kit. The kit should include:
Water, at least one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radi
A Flashlight with extra batteries
A First aid kit
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Manual can opener for food
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger and contact name and numbers in case you loose power on your phone.

When a watch or a warning is issued:
Leave low lying areas.
Protect your windows with plywood boards, or storm shutters.
Secure outside objects.
Make sure you have plenty of fuel and water.
Have several days supply of food and water for each family member.
If called to evacuate, do so immediately.

Have a plan for your household
Pay attention to local weather reports on radio, television, or the internet.
Have house boarded up, or have storm shutters in place.
Have plenty of food and water.
Make sure all your tools, supplies, and first aid kit are available for use.
Have a secure room available.

If you decide to stay during the storm:
Stay in a Secure Room.
Stay away from windows.
Do not use the phone
If you use candles, keep an eye on them to avoid a fire
Monitor Weather and Civil Service Bulletins on either regular or NOAA radio.
Remain indoors when the eye moves over your area because the storm will resume shortly.

After the storm is over:
Make sure that all is definitely clear outside, and the storm has completely passed before going out.
Report downed power lines, and stay away from them.
Be patient. Things will take a while before they get back to normal.
Keep your doors locked to deter looters

If you decide to leave and you’re taking a pet:

Research facilities that are pet friendly now so you’ll know where to go.
Make sure your pet’s ID tags are up-to-date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Also consider microchipping your pets.
Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.
And Make a pet emergency kit with food, Bottled water, Medications
Veterinary records, Cat litter and pan, Manual can opener, Food dishes, First aid kit and other supplies
